• Black Rhino – 3,500 left in the world.
• Indian Rhino – 2,500 left and none in the wild!
• Sumatran Rhino – Less than 300 left in the world.
• Javanese Rhino – less than 40 to 50 left in the world.
• Northern White Rhino – 7 (SEVEN) left in the world.

It’s not a pretty picture.

But all is not lost. Due to conservation efforts, the Southern White Rhino has been brought back from 500 to approximately 17,000. But poachers are now killing Southern White Rhinos at the rate of 1 per day.

Mike Ross of Dan-Inject Dart Guns is helping in the Rhino conservation efforts currently underway in Africa. Darting Rhinos for conservation purposes, they are able to take genetic samples and embed microchips for identification purposes should an animal be poached. This is indispensable in the forensic work of conservation.

Dan-Inject Dart Guns is proud to announce that we will be participating in AAZV’s International Committee’s darting competition being held during the AAZV Convention, October 23, 2010 through October 29, 2010. The competition will benefit the International Conference Scholarship. The scholarship particulars are as follows:

AAZV’s International Committee is pleased to announce the International Conference Scholarship call for applications. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to zoo and wildlife veterinarians from foreign countries to attend the annual AAZV conference. Grants will usually be awarded in amounts ranging from $1,000-$2,000. The funds are made possible by the voluntary contributions of individual AAZV members, the public and fundraising efforts by AAZV / International Committee members. All international members are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants from developing countries with demonstrable financial needs and focused educational/ conservation goals.

The International Conference Scholarship is one of AAZV’s fundraisers to collect money to pay for the International Travel Scholarship. It is intended for graduated international veterinarians to attend the AAZV conference and expand their professional network, covers airfare, registration and part of lodging.

The benefit darting competition will be with targets at set distances. Prizes will be awarded for the best shot.

The dogs are darted as part of a long-term large carnivore study in Zambia to estimate populations and evaluate threats to their persistence. Zambia is one of a handful of countries left in Africa that are considered to have viable populations of this species.

Wild dogs are relatively small targets and are highly endangered. The DanInject guns provide the essential accuracy, reliability and low-impact shots needed for darting operations.
