We have taught the local hunters (native indigenous and farmers) and men on the field how to use the equipment. They used to kill the tapir, but now are able to help in their conservation. They are the ones who have darted the tapir in the photo.

• It comes with a manometer giving you total control over the release pressure allowing you to dart as close as 1 meter from the animal – humanely and efficiently.

Mike Ross Will Speak At The 2010 ZAA Conference

The Sixth Annual Zoological Association of America (ZAA) Conference is being held from November 10-13, 2010 in Lafayette, Louisiana.

ZAA’s Mission . . .
is to promote the responsible ownership, management, and propagation of animals in both private and public domains.

According to the ZAA mission statement,

the ZAA strives to:

• Serve the needs of its members.
• Protect and defend the right to own animals
• Defend the owners of animals against the false allegations and mischaracterizations of “animal rights” activists.
• Promote legal and ethical methods for sustainable wildlife management.
• Encourage responsible conservation of genetics through cooperative breeding programs in private and public domains.
• Promote high standards and ethics through Zoological Association of America accreditation programs.
• Educate the media, policy-makers and the public through advocacy and adherence to best practices.
• Promote “conservation through commerce” as the only sustainable alternative to failed command and control wildlife regulations.

The 2010 ZAA conference will feature social events where professionals can meet and network with one another, tours of the Zoo of Acadania, and seminars featuring a variety of speakers.

Giving a lecture on Chemical Immobilization Equipment at 8:00 AM, Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the ZAA Conference will be Mike Ross of Dan-Inject Dart Guns.

The dogs are darted as part of a long-term large carnivore study in Zambia to estimate populations and evaluate threats to their persistence. Zambia is one of a handful of countries left in Africa that are considered to have viable populations of this species.

Wild dogs are relatively small targets and are highly endangered. The DanInject guns provide the essential accuracy, reliability and low-impact shots needed for darting operations.
